Boise Illustrated Zoning Code
In collaboration with All Together, we created a 60-page, full-color illustrated zoning guide. Commissioned by the city of Boise, Idaho, its goal was to help educate and engage the community about the upcoming changes to their zoning code.
Why Comics?
In 2024, I was approached by All Together, a collective that specializes in place-making. The goal was to bring to life Boise’s dream — an “Illustrated Zoning Code Guide.” Immediately, I was excited that such an entity wanted to make such a wonderful gift for their city. Comics as a form of storytelling would help demystify civic processes to encourage community involvement as well as a sharable keepsake, and an educational tool.
Are cast of characters representing Boise residents and city staff.
The Illustrated Zoning Code Guide became the ultimate exercise in finding the balance of knowing when to “show, and not tell” as to not overwhelm the reader with information on the page.
Citizen Consultant
Throughout the drawing process I leaned on the Boise city staff members as well as the team at All Together to understand these urban planning concepts that were being described in the initial sketches and script. We collaborated to find the most effective communication to break down these complex ideas into a memorable and easy-to-follow narrative. While illustrating, I was able to voice questions and concerns to the group that were not just a part of my comic making process, but inquiries I would possibly have as your everyday Boise resident reading this guide.
Proof of Concept
Since the printing of this Illustrated Zoning Guide we’ve seen how successful this comic has become in Boise. The comic is being used as an educational tool in real estate offices, during schools visiting city hall, and at local non-profits like The WaterShed. The high-resolution illustrations have been utilized outside of their original comic form as infographic posters throughout these spaces. The booklet was first being dispensed at city hall, libraries, and their local comic festival, as well as having an accessible alt text version for download on their website.
This illustrated guide was a way to flex my comic muscles in a different way than I was used to, and for that it is one of my most fulfilling projects to date.
